BALENA
Inspired by the gentle grace of a whale, Balena invites adults to reconnect with their inner child. Through biomimicry and exaggerated scale, it transforms the simple act of sitting into a moment of calm curiosity and reflection. Balena explores how design can evoke the emotional landscapes of childhood; inviting users to rest, dream, and rediscover the sense of wonder once found in a world much larger than themselves.
IDEATION —
prototyping —
After the ideation phase, I decided to focus on designing a chair that could bring back the sense of wonder often felt in childhood. I wanted the piece to feel large, sculptural, and emotionally engaging while still remaining fully functional. I moved from sketching into early prototypes, developing the idea of a rocking chair that uses biomimicry to loosely resemble the form of a whale. This stage helped clarify the direction of the design and guided the next steps of the process, moving into 3D modeling, rendering, and eventually the construction of the chair at full scale.
