BAnca de las brisas
Created for the World Design Capital 2024, Banca de las Brisas embodies the connection between San Diego and Tijuana through form, material, and movement. Its flowing backrest draws inspiration from the mountain range and ocean waves that link the two cities, symbolizing unity through shared geography. A cement finish grounds the piece in San Diego’s urban language, while resin-encased Mexican textiles bring warmth, color, and cultural depth. Together, these elements create a bench that invites rest and reflection on the beauty of coexistence across borders.
IDEATION —
prototyping —
After the ideation phase, I moved into prototyping to test how the textile could actually work as part of the structure. I experimented with soaking the fabric in epoxy to see if it could support the weight of a seated user while still holding its shape and staying attached to the frame. This stage also helped me understand if the material could keep its color and maintain a flowing form, almost like it is being moved by the wind. The textile, sourced from Mexico, became an important element in representing Tijuana within the design and reinforcing the idea of unity between the two cities.
